Mental Well-being of International Students of the University of Helsinki – Social Support Activity as the Solution

This blog post presents a research-based social-support intervention designed to address the mental health challenges faced by international students at the University of Helsinki. Based on survey data, Social Support Theory, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), the project proposes a structured peer-support and mentorship activity to promote belonging, resilience, and community connection. The post highlights how strengthened social networks can serve as an effective solution to stress, adaptation difficulties, and loneliness among international students.

About the Author
As part of the Topical Issues course, four international and multidisciplinary students—Ayumu Ochi, Mahabuba Akter, Lucía Liting Jorge Gómez, and Jesaja Kärkkäinen—collaborated to explore the mental health challenges faced by international students at the University of Helsinki. Using empirical data, theoretical frameworks, and collaborative design thinking, the group developed an innovative social-support activity aimed at strengthening students’ psychological well-being, sense of belonging, and overall integration into university life.
